Unmanned Systems Canada 2012 Student UAV Competition Results

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Southport, MB– May 4-6, 2012 – Five university student teams from across Canada competed in the Operational Phase of the 4th  Unmanned Systems Canada UAV Student Competition hosted by Southport Aerospace Centre south of Portage la Prarie MB. The teams were challenged to use unmanned  air vehicles (UAVs) in support of forest fire fighting.  They were tasked with automatically locating targets that would represent points of interest in an actual forest fire fighting scenario in the remote Canadian wilderness, using their own experimental unmanned aircraft flying under the control of autopilots.

The first place finisher was Team VAMUdeS from Université de Sherbrooke (QC), followed by Team Guardian from Simon Fraser University (BC) and Team Blackbird from Carleton University (ON).

Unmanned Systems Canada will continue to develop and promote interest and expertise in these technologies at the university and college levels and encourage future generations of engineers to become involved in, and contribute to, a leading role for Canada.

The students impressed the judges with their innovative approaches to the challenges presented and by working together to make the most of the competition experience.  The year-on-year growth in interest in the competition and the tremendous increase in overall capabilities exhibited is a testament to the potential of the next generation of Canadian engineers.

The final results of the weekend activities were announced and cash prizes presented at the Awards Banquet on May 6th.  All teams who participated in the operational phase of the competition received a cash award; overall $10,750.00 of prize money was presented to the teams. Eight teams registered for the competition in September 2011 and completed Phase 1 of the competition, which required the submission of design papers in mid-February.  Phase 2 saw 5 UAV teams come to Southport for the operational portion of the competition.  Prizes for both the Phase 1 and Phase 2 were presented at the Awards Banquet.
